ABOUT

ZHU JINSHI

Born Beijing, China 1954, Zhu Jinshi moved to Germany in the mid-1980s, and at present lives and works in Beijing. Zhu began painting abstract works in the late 1970s, and participated in the Stars group exhibition, the first avant-garde art exhibition held after the Cultural Revolution. The core of Zhu’s artistic practice is most fittingly characterized by traditional Chinese aesthetics, which emphasises the harmony between human beings and the natural world.

Part of the legendary generation of artists who left China in the 1980s, Zhu Jinshi was clearly marked by his move to another country and culture. It was in Germany that Zhu Jinshi first encountered the work of Joseph Beuys, Carl Andre and Arte Povera amongst others; conceptual and performance work seemed much more central in Germany than did abstract painting.  He produces abstract paintings whose surfaces are built up with thick, near-sculptural layers of oil paint. Resembling colorful landscapes, Zhu’s images range in palette and scale, but the artist is known to always apply his oil paint with spatulas and shovels. Producing dense lashings of color, the artist’s method recalls the style and techniques espoused by the German Expressionists, who Zhu was profoundly influenced by during his years living in Berlin.

Zhu belonged to a group of Chinese avant-garde artists named the Stars, which formed in 1979 to challenge aesthetic conventions and exhibit their work publicly. The group, which included the famous dissident artist Ai Weiwei, was granted an exhibition in 1980 at Beijing’s National Gallery, a breakthrough in Chinese cultural expression that helped to establish the creative force of the individual. “Although I operate within the realm of form,” Zhu has said, “my idea is to go beyond the limitations set by form and break free.” He has also produced photographic, video, installation, and performance works.

ABOUT

ZHOU YINGHUA
aka ( MICHEAL CHOW )

born in Shanghai China 1939, he now resides in California.  Son of the famed master of Beijing Opera, Zhou Xinfang, Yinghua was born into a family of theater. At the age of 13, he traveled to England to study art and architecture at St Martins School of Art and the Hammersmith School of Art and Building (now Chelsea School of Art), respectively.    After a decade as a young painter, Yinghua found that the world was quite ready to share in his gifts and so took a short hiatus (50 years) to collect his thoughts. Nearly half a century later in 2011, Yinghua returned to his true passion of painting, with the enthusiasm of his youth and the wisdom of his age.

Check out his Work at the Warhol Museum Opening Feb 13, 2016

In June 2012, lightning struck in the form of pure silver. Precious metal tiles simultaneously stretched, welded, painted and sculpted create 3 dimensional paintings that shift and change at every angle. His mixed media pieces, where precious metal is juxtaposed with trash, forces the viewer to reassess preconceptions about what is precious and what is thrown away. For Yinghua, the act of painting is an internal desire to channel the chaos and harmony of nature in order to achieve clarity. It only took a moment and a lifetime. Before changing course and opening his first restaurant "MR CHOW” in 1968, which became an international success, spawning locations around the globe. MR CHOW  operates in seven locations around the world and has become synonymous with high-end Chinese cuisine and the diverse set of artists and luminaries for whom the restaurant was (and remains) a social hub. Now after nearly 50 years, he has returned to his first passion and paints almost daily.

This is mini tribute to the master,

Ellsworth Kelly

American b. 1923 -2015

ABOUT

Ellsworth Kelly, evading critical attempts to classify him as a Color Field, hard-edge, or Minimalist painter, has redefined abstraction in art, establishing himself through his drawings, paintings, sculptures, and prints as one of the most important artists of our time. Kelly's visual vocabulary was drawn from observation of the world around him - shapes and colors found in plants, architecture, shadows on a wall or a lake and has been shaped by his interest in the spaces between places and objects and between his work and its viewers. He has said, "In my work, I don't want you to look at the surface; I want you to look at the form, the relationships." Kelly has been the subject of major exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, and his work is in many public collections, including those of the Centre Pompidou, Paris, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, and Tate Modern, London. Kelly lived and worked in Spencertown, New York.
