BERNIE FUCHS

Included are several of Bernie's preliminary sketches. For me, tend to have even more spontaneous energy than his finishes. His earlier works in the late 50s, 60s were primarily on illustration board, showcasing with wandering pencil line and raw painterly wash backgrounds. From the mid 70's on, he changed his technique to exclusively oil on canvas.

In 1962, Fuchs was summoned to the White House to paint a new portrait of JFK. Here's a pic of Bernie in the Oval Office taking photos of JFK as reference.

I remember he told us during one of his lecture visits to RISD in 87, that he was highly inspired by the color and light of French Master, Edouard Vuillard. Which you can see clearly here in these 2 sketches.
