THE ILLUSTRATORS WORKSHOP
A visit with an illustration icon,
Included are several of Bernie's preliminary sketches. For me, tend to have even more spontaneous energy than his finishes. His earlier works in the late 50s, 60s were primarily on illustration board, showcasing with wandering pencil line and raw painterly wash backgrounds. From the mid 70's on, he changed his technique to exclusively oil on canvas.
Cropped sketch composition from above.
I remember he told us during one of his lecture visits to RISD in 87, that he was highly inspired by the color and light of French Master, Edouard Vuillard. Which you can see clearly here in these 2 sketches.
In the mid 70's on, he changed his style to oil on canvas.
