I was aware that the teaching of drawing was being stopped almost 30 years ago. And I always said, 'The teaching of drawing is the teaching of looking.' A lot of people don't look very hard.

I'm always excited by the unlikely, never by ordinary things.

Of course you can still paint a landscape - it's not been worn out.

Smoking calms me down. It's enjoyable. I don't want politicians deciding what is exciting in my life.

 ABOUT :

David Hockney

British, born 1937

David Hockney attended the Bradford School of Art before entering the Royal College of Art, where he remained between 1959 and 1962. His classmates included Peter Blake and R. B. Kitaj. Hockney's celebrity came while he was still a student, when his work was included in the Young Contemporaries exhibition, which marked the rise of British pop art. He visited Los Angeles in the early 1960s and settled there soon after. He is often associated with Southern California and the many works he produced there over several decades. David Hockney was elected to the Royal Academy in 1991.

I'm fed up with being bossed around.
